Some people say that cross country (XC) racing is one of the most grueling and demanding sports that you can participate in. Whether it be GNCC style, with the various terrain changes encompassing dirt tracks, woods, rocks, roots, mud, ruts, grass fields, sand pits and motocross, or Baja style where long distances are the norm, XC racing has it all. As demanding as this sport is, it has been growing in recent years, and there are several race circuits in the northeast. Plans for next year include racing in the 30+B Sport class. I will be attending races in the GNCC and ATVA nationals series, as well as some smaller local races to get my niece comfortable with racing. Who knows, she may race some nationals in the 90cc stock class after all! |

On Sunday, February 21, 2010 I rode in the Evansville Harescramble race in
Pennsylvania. My quad has been getting modifications for the past two or three
weeks. So I'm not totally used to it yet. I'm still getting a feel for it. I
was very excited to see how it would run. It felt like forever before my race
because I didn't race until 3 O'clock pm. I got to the starting line and felt
very confident. I started in 3rd right from the starting line. I didn't mind
though! I rode not even half way when all the sudden my quad just shut off.

After my last round here I decided to leave the wolverine 450 at home.. My tried and true wolverine 350 replaced it.. While not as powerful as the 450, she seems nimbler, and has held up well for being a 10 year old machine. I prepped the YFZ and Predator as well, and loaded all the quads up the night before.. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous, I had made a LOT of modifications to the 90 the week before...

On Sunday I raced my first quad race. I rode the mud and snow race in Evansville PA. I rode a 2006 Polaris Predator. Really fun little quad I have to say!!! I was surprised to see that there were about 10 people in my class. I wasn't real scared to be honest I was excited and very confident. Once the yellow flag went down I just hit the gas and went. I was behind a young kid who was slowing me down and eventually got in front of him. I passed some people here and there but for the most part everyone was pretty spread out.

I headed out to the Evansville mud-n-snow harescramble with alot of anticipation. This was going to be my niece's first race, and I had decided to run in two seperate classes, running two races. I loaded up my trusty YFZ, my not-so-trusty Wolverine 450, and the Predator 90 in the trailer on Saturday night, and my sister and niece came up to stay overnight so we could get out early in the morning. My niece and I loaded the last bit of her gear, and we all got to bed at a decent hour to be rested for Sunday's race..
We headed out at 7:30, and got to the track about 10am. Got everybody signed up, and they announced that the races were not going to be 30 minutes, but rather 50 minutes each. Ok, I liked that idea, but was nervous if my niece would like it as much. No worries though, she was thrilled that she could race longer. I suited up, gave my sis the camera and headed to the line. |

4th place at Walden MX Mud n Snow Scramble - 1-17-10 |

Wow.. What a fun race..
I originally planned to go to Evansville for their Mud and Snow scrambles instead of up to Walden, but the day before the event, Evansville postponed their race for a week due to bad weather. I decided to hit Walden at the last minute, my quad was all prepped for Evansville, and I figured why not at least get some race time in..
Well, I show up, pay $30 at the gate and ask where reg is.. The guy says "you just did!" LOL. Ok, so it was pretty informal..
Well, I rolled in about 12:30, and Blizzard (Chris) shows up 5 mins later.. Mojave Magic (Mike) rolls in at almost 1, and they wanted us on the line at 1:15.. Well, I gotta hand it to them, they WERE on time! I decided to run B class today because C was mostly sportsman class machines, or 4x4's.. We all go to the line, get handed a number to stick on our helmet and they started the race.

What a great day for me!
My row started with a blackwater style start, 5 quads at a time, and I was in the 2nd grouping. That meant I got to start with my motor running, so when I was given the go, I stabbed the throttle and got the holeshot for my group. The quad felt AWESOME at the track (Thanks go to Fordfreak for helping me with an alignment this week), and it felt like I was on rails. I started passing people in the first "mini lap" and came around to start my first real lap. Well thanks to someone who I wont mention, a barrier was torn down, and on my first real lap I followed the youth course for about 250ft off course. By the time I got turned around and back on track, I had watched like 15 quads pass. Now I had work to do.

4th place at 7-18-09 AMA ATV Nationals |

Personally, I thought it was an AWESOME course, things ran super smooth, but there were a bunch of whimps who were cutting the course in the open fields. Why bother racing if you cut the course? Go home you lazy azzes!
As for the race, my holeshot sucked. She fired right up but when I grabbed a handful of throttle I just spun the tires on the wet grass. I was like 3rd to last going into the woods but I actually prefer to pick off riders rather than trying to stay in front the whole time. The first lap was a few bottlenecks as we spread out, but I loved the long course (~8 miles I was told) and settled into a rhythm. |

Not the best day for me.. My holeshot was pretty good, I was 3rd to the corner (only the 800's were in front of me since we go off with utes) and my first lap wasn't so bad. Somewhere on my second lap I managed to start getting flats, and by the end of lap 2 I had 2 right side flats (thank god for beadlocks) and managed to go over the bars once. Lap 3 was tough with the flats (no spares brought this time), and managed to go over the bars once and roll it once too (hit a rock on the right side, it bounced me left and my left tire just drove right up a tree).. Finish the 3rd lap and I'm feeling beaten, but still got it in me. Problem was one of those over the bars episodes pushed my bars forward, re-adjusted my throttle, and I couldn't position it right again. Cramps from hell!! (Today my right wrist is sore and swollen, I'm hoping its just muscular, I broke that wrist once already racing in 2007). |
